Seared Salmon Nigiri Recipe

Seared Salmon Nigiri is a traditional Japanese sushi dish of small oblong balls of sushi rice topped with a slice of seared salmon. This dish combines tender salmon fillets with perfectly cooked sushi rice seasoned with rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. The end result is a delectable and elegant dish that is ideal for any sushi fan.

Instructions

  • In a fine mesh strainer, rinse the sushi rice until the water runs clear.
  • In a medium saucepan, bring the rice and water to a boil over high heat.
  • Reduce the heat to low, cover, and leave to cook for 18-20 minutes, or until the water is absorbed.
  • Remove the saucepan from the heat and set it aside, covered, for 10 minutes.
  • While the rice is cooking, season the salmon with salt and black pepper.
  • In a large skillet over high heat, heat the vegetable oil.
  • When the pan is hot, add the salmon and sear for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
  • Combine the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small saucepan.
  • Heat until the sugar has dissolved over medium heat.
  • Add the vinegar mixture to the cooked rice in a large mixing bowl.
  • Allow the rice to cool to room temperature after mixing thoroughly.
  • After the rice has cooled, form small oblong balls with wet hands.
  • Top each ball with a slice of seared salmon, gently pressing it in place.
  • Nigiri should be served with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger on the side.
